Q108241: Backing Up Files on Computer
Description

After a file is updated by an installation on your computer, it is virtually impossible to revert back to the old file unless it has been backed up on your computer. You may need to back up your files to make sure that you can revert back to old files in case the installation errors out and suspends prematurely. Most new installations contain a rollback mechanism that rolls back, or reverts, to the original file on the computer in case any errors occur while running the installation.

Procedure

The process of backing up your file simply consists of creating another copy of the file and saving it on your computer.

Back up Files

  1. Launch Windows Explorer by using the following keyboard combination: Windows Key + E or by selecting start > run, and typing explorer.
  2. Browse to the file on your computer that you want to back up.
  3. Right-click on the file and select copy.

  4. Go the location where you want to create the back up of the file and paste this file. This creates another copy of the file on your computer. You can now either rename the file, e.g. filename.bak, by right-clicking and selecting rename.

Restore Files

  1. Launch Windows Explorer.
  2. Go to the location where the backup file exists.
  3. Right-click on the file and select rename to return the file to its original name if you changed it while backing up the file.
  4. Right-click on the file and select copy.
  5. Go to the location where you want to restore this file.
  6. Right-click in that location and select paste.
